How to make your own whole wheat bread

This is one of the easiest, fail-proof, delicious recipes I have ever made.  Who doesn’t love a piece of homemade bread, fresh out of the oven?
This bread is moist, soft, and fluffy.

Whole Wheat Bread

5 cups warm water

2 1/2 Tablespoons yeast  (I use Saf-Instant), you can purchase here.

5 Tablespoons sugar

1/2 cup molasses (my fave found here)

1/2 cup oil,  I have used regular ole’ canola oil, or when I decided to be healthier I used coconut oil.  Melt it first by warming it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds if you are using coconut oil.

4 teaspoons salt

9-12 cups of whole wheat flour  (any flour can be used)

Mix warm water, yeast, and sugar together.  Let sit for 5-10 minutes.

While the yeast is sitting, I usually grind my wheat in my wheat grinder, so it is fresh.  Plus- it is the perfect amount of time for my yeast to activate.

This is the best wheat grinder I have used.  I highly recommend it.  It is quiet and fairly clean. You can purchase it here.

Note: you do not have to use fresh ground wheat for this recipe.

I used hard white wheat.

After your yeast is the perfect bubbly mixture add your molasses, and oil. Mix slightly. Turn on your timer for 10 minutes.

Turn on your mixer to the highest setting.

Start adding your flour, one cup at a time, when you have added about 4 cups, add your salt. If you add your salt before your flour it has the potential to kill your yeast- which equals flat bread. Continue adding the rest of the flour until your dough pulls away from the bowl.

You want to add all of your ingredients within the first 4 minutes of your 10 minute mixing time.

After all your ingredients have been added, let the mixer continue mixing on the highest setting for the rest of the 10 minutes.

It should look like this when finished.

Grease the counter with cooking spray or oil and cut with a serrated knife into 4-5 five equal size portions. I can usually get 4-5 loaves of bread out of a batch.

Try to keep your little one’s fingers out of the dough. My boys love to eat the dough.
That loaf may need some reshaping… don’t ya just love kids!

Let the loaves rise until double in size, usually about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how warm  your house is.

After it has risen, bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until the internal temperature is 180 degrees.

So that is how you make a yummy loaf of bread!  My family is addicted to it now and we hate store bought bread.

My 4 year old particularly loves it toasted, with brown sugar and butter on top.  It is a real treat!
